Junior Snipe Florida State Championship

Junior Snipe

After a couple of practice days on this new boat "The Snipe" with crew Enrique Quinteros, Axel managed to finish first and became double State Champion (Optimist and Snipe).
This was a two day regatta (championship) that was raced with light to medium winds. The first day of racing the sailors were sent in because of a lightning storm that covered Biscayne Bay. When the storm cleared, the fleet went out to continue racing. They came just in time to get every boat out before another electric storm hit Coconut Grove. The Race Committee did a great job completing 3 races each day.

Biography

Axel was born on June 1994, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He spent his first years, sailing with his parents and even sometimes on board for regattas.

Every evening, during the weekends, long lines of towing Optis come back from their regattas. Axel, which at that time was learning his first words, use to point at them to express how much he wanted to be on board of one of these small boats.  At the age of 7, Axel started the Optimist sailing Program at the Club Nautico Sudeste.

When he was 8, Axel and his family moved to Weston, FL. USA.  Immediately Axel was enrolled at the sailing program of Lauderdale Yacht Club, and started racing in the Green Fleet.

In no time he was ready to move to White Fleet, having great results. His next step was to participate on his first Team Trails for 2005 (Annapolis) where he qualified for the National Development Team.
Soon he was invited to be part of a team with other young sailors, the “No Excuses Sailing Team", and started sailing out from Miami Yacht Club. His coach, Leandro Spina was the key of complementing the hard training and intense practices, needed to success in this complicated sport.

During this winter of 2005 he went to Houston, TX for the Midwinter Regatta, were he qualified for   "Lago di Garda" Regatta in Italy.

In the following months, Axel won the Naples Cup, Edison Sailing Center Jr. Olympic Festival River Romp in Fort Myers, the Southeast Dinghy Championships in Key Biscayne, Washington Birthday Regatta in Palm Beach, and other good positions in several local races.

The 2006 Team Trials took place at Long Island, NY, where Axel qualified to be on the USA team for the North American Optimist Championship 2006, at Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Some other International regattas were a good experience, like the ones in Puerto Rico and Scotiabank Regatta in St. Thomas.
During the 2006 Midwinter's in New Orleans, he qualified to represent the USA in the South American Championship 20007. Niteroi, Brazil,
At the 2007 Team Trials (Coral Reef yacht Club) he finished 5th Overall. This result was good enough to qualify to represent the United States at the World Championship 2007 (Sardinia, Italy) and North Americans Championship.2007, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Axel will be training very hard to do his best

As Axel says: -" Sailing is very complete, I enjoy the physical, as well mental aspects of this sport. You have to be smart, strong and extremely fast.”
Also I have the great opportunity to make good friends and sail with excellent sailors from different places around the country and the world.
I need to continue training very hard to reach my goals, these are to be a good sportsman and some day compete in the Olympics.
